Sierra Centre - Toxicity of Mercury Fillings

Mercury Fillings Before & After

Should I replace my old Mercury fillings?

We answer that question with a hearty 'yes'! Not only are there serious questions about how old amalgam fillings effect your overall health, but that they do serious damage to the structure of your teeth.

As such, Mercury vapor and dental infections can have a negative impact on overall health. Due to this concern, we focus on patient education and strive to remove mercury amalgam, silver, fillings in a safe way. To accomplish this, we follow removal protocols based on recommendations of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and other prominent biological and holistic dental organizations.

Sierra Centre for Dental Wellness neither endorses nor vouches for the accuracy and or opinions expressed in any YouTube ™ or 3rd Party Video

Our team is highly aware and trained to safely remove mercury fillings. Safe removal includes use of a rubber dam, the option of pure oxygen, and copious amount of water with suction.

After the mercury is removed, we restore the tooth with safe biocompatible materials. The mercury that is removed is isolated from our patients and staff and disposed of responsibly. In addition, we have installed a special water filter that separates the mercury so it does not go down the drain and pollute the environment.

At the Sierra Centre for Dental Wellness, we see ourselves primarily as health care providers who can also provide you with a superior cosmetic result. A proportion of our work is involved with replacing obselete materials and techniques of dentistry done using non-precious metals such as mercury.

Is the Mercury in my mouth poisioning me?

At the Sierra Centre for Dental Wellness, our philosphy is that we won't do anything to one of our clients that we would not do to ourselves or a member of our family. Needless to say, we would never use mercury to restore our own teeth and therefore, we would never use it in your teeth either!

What Do We Use?

We use a system that uses a technique called Air Abrasion that is safe, gentle and relatively noise free..

Sierra Centre - Air Abrasion (KCP Alternative)

What is Air Abrasion (or KCP)

Sierra Centre - Wisdom Teeth Removal
"Air Abrasion Technology"
(Running Time 1:26) (Size 4.96mb)

The technique called kinetic cavity preparation uses kinetic energy to remove tooth structure. Air Abrasion (drill less dentistry) a microscopically fine powder is carried to the tooth by a stream of air, gently spraying away decay. In a simple sense, you could say it works like a precise miniature sandblaster.

Some fractured teeth cannot be saved

Many cracked teeth can be treated successfully with root canal therapy and a crown, especially those whose cracks are located above the gum line only. However, these treatments may not save the tooth when a fracture has extended into the root.

Thanks to its precision and gentleness, the KCP allows us to treat decay at an earlier stage without as much removal of healthy tooth material, thereby helping to preserve the strength of the tooth. Teeth treated this way may be less likely to require crowns in the future. Smaller fillings are less susceptible to wear and may last longer. The KCP system creates a cavity surface that is so ideal for use with tooth-colored composite fillings. In some instances, the KCP actually allows us to complete your treatment in fewer visits.

The aspect of the KCP that many patients appreciate most is its comfort. The KCP system greatly reduces heat and vibrations, two sources of discomfort traditionally associated with fillings. That's why the KCP is often used without anesthetics. This also enhances our ability to treat patients who are pregnant or medically compromised. With the KCP, we can often treat children without the two things they fear most the needle and the drill.

Besides tooth-colored fillings, the KCP is very useful in a number of cosmetic procedures such as veneers, inlays and onlays. It also allows us to apply protective sealants in a matter of seconds a time frame even shorter than the attention span of most youngsters.

Though the KCP will dramatically reduce our overall reliance on the drill, it is not appropriate for every part of every procedure. For example, we will continue to use the drill to remove silver (amalgam) fillings and for crown preparations, Please ask us about the role the KCP might play in your treatment.

We offer drill free dentistry in our Sierra Centre office!

At Sierra we understand the apprehension of our patients and now offer Drill free dentistry to accomplish what was once only done using drills. That means no more dental drill noise that produces apprehension and fear in many patients.

Drill free dentistry is considered by some to be a gentler form of performing the task of cleaning out cavities in teeth in preparation for fillings or other functions that the dental drill would normally be used for. Air abrasion dentistry uses powerful streams of air combined with an ultra fine abrasive compound to remove the tooth decay and prevent it from spreading further in the tooth.

Once the tooth is cleaned, your dentist will fill the affected area with mercury free dental fillings. If the decay is on the front of the tooth the dentist may use a tooth colored filling (also mercury free) or apply a bonding agent. Whichever means of filling your tooth is used; you can rest assured that drill free dentistry is the method of preparing your tooth for a filling that has come to be a preferred method by many of our patients.
