Sierra Centre - Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Sierra Centre - Benefits of Using Nitrous Oxide
"Nitrous Oxide"
(Running Time 1:19) (Size 4.68mb)
Inhalation sedation, laughing gas, relative analgesia, RA, happy gas, gas, nitrous, nitrous oxide, N2O-O2... this one has more names than any other sedation technique! Inhalation sedation with nitrous oxide (N2O) and oxygen (O2) has been described as "representing the most nearly 'ideal' clinical sedative circumstance"...

Nitrous Oxide provides a tranquil relaxed feeling and you are conscious and aware during the procedure but your stress is greatly reduced.

So what is it? And what does it do?

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is simply a gas which you can breathe in. It has no color, smell, and doesn't irritate the body. It was discovered in 1772. Humphrey Davy (1778-1829), one of the pioneers of N2O experimentation.

Effects of nitrous oxide: it kills pain - and it induces a pleasurable feeling. After 5 minutes or so of breathing in the gas, you should feel a euphoric feeling spread throughout your body. You will be relaxed and free from anxiety. Some people find that there are auditory or visual effects as well. Some patients report feeling a bit light headed and often people get the giggles, hence the name laughing gas.

Sierra Centre - Intravenous (IV)

IV Sedation may be a preferred method of sedation for you if you have to have extensive dental work performed, or if you have had any prior difficult experiences with local anaesthesia or oral sedation.

IV Sedation is a more profound, peaceful sleep-like state versus Nitrous Oxide or Oral Conscious Sedation. You will be barely aware. There may be brief periods where you are in a controlled state of unconsciousness so that you are not bothered by treatments that can cause discomfort. This is an excellent, safe, and predictable form of sedation for many patients.

Your intravenous sedation appointment will begin in our specialized sedation suite. Once you are resting comfortably with a warm and cozy blanket, your sedation medication will be administered intravenously. During your treatment, your vital signs will be continually and constantly monitored. With IV sedation, you will be comfortably asleep throughout your entire dental appointment and will have absolutely no recollection of any of the treatment procedure.

Is it safe? Are there any contraindications?

IV sedation is EXTREMELY safe when carried out under the supervision of a specially-trained dentist. Purely statistically speaking, it's even safer than local anaesthetic on its own!

Sierra Centre - Oral Conscious Sedation (Pill)

Sleep through your next dental appointment? Yes you can!

Sierra Centre - Oral Conscious Sedation
"Oral Conscious Sedation"
(Running Time 2:00) (Size 7.14mb)

Oral sedation is a simple and safe option that allows you to be perfectly relaxed and comfortable throughout your entire dental treatment.

Oral conscious sedation is a method that helps certain patients cope more comfortably with dental appointments.

Oral conscious sedation is useful in certain situations for patients who:

  • Are anxious about dental appointments
  • Have difficulty being numbed with local anesthesia
  • Have a severe gag response
  • Suffer from very sensitive teeth
  • Want to have a lot of dental work done during a single, longer appointment

A Typical Visit

Your sedation appointment will begin in our roomy and comfortable sedation suite. Once we have helped you to rest comfortably with a warm and cozy blanket, you will be given some medication (small pills) which will cause you to become sleepy. Your pulse and blood pressure will be continually monitored.

Once you are completely relaxed and comfortable, we will begin your dental treatment. Although during your treatment you will be responsive and awake, you will be largely unaware of what is happening and will have very little recollection, if any, of what transpired during your dental appointment.

When we have completed your dental treatment, you will be ready to have your companion escort you home, where you can rest comfortably for the rest of the day.

Facts & Benefits of
Sedation Dentistry

  • It really works! You can sleep through your entire dental appointment with no pain.
  • Sedation patients tend to bleed less as they are less active the first day.
  • Traditional sedation medications are made with a narcotic called midazolam. At Sierra we sedate without the use of the narcotic and therefore eliminate the typical “sedation hangover”. With over 300 patients treated, we still have had no adverse effects.
  • People who have difficulty with numbness find that they have no problem when sedated.
  • It is a safe way to reduce the fatigue of extended dental treatment requiring long visits.
  • Our trained sedation personnel will explain all the alternatives to you. We realize that each person has special needs.
  • No anxious memories of injections, discomfort, or drilling.
  • You won't be aware of any noises, smells or tastes associated with dental care.
  • You will have no problem keeping your mouth open for an extended period of time if necessary.
  • With intravenous sedation, you will have little or no memory of the experience. You won't remember any sounds or smells.
  • There is no need to fast to have sedation dentistry.
  • Most insurance policies pay for sedation during surgery.
  • Complex dental treatments often requiring six to eight appointments can usually be completed in as little as one or two - all while you sleep.
